In 1966 England won the World Cup. The image of Bobby Moore waving the Jules Rimet trophy whilst being carried shoulder high through the crowd is etched in the annals of history. 1966 was the year that Pele established himself as probably the best footballer ever. London was in the grip of gangsters and the Kray twins were at the height of their power. The Beatles were at their peak leading the pop revolution. Carnaby Street was as famous as Paris in the world of fashion
Before the World Cup had even started the competition almost ended in disaster. The trophy was placed on exhibition in Westminster Hall and was stolen amidst high security, whilst mass was being celebrated a few corridors away. Scotland Yard threw all it's energy into recovering the trophy in order to save the embarrassment of Prime Minister Harold Wilson but to no avail. Three weeks later a man was walking his pet collie Pickles when the inquisitive canine began to sniff under a bush and discovered the by now infamous Jules Rimet trophy.
